假如琉森要舉辦一個阿巴多紀念音樂會，該演奏哪些曲目？首選馬勒的第二號交響曲《復活》最後樂章，第三號交響曲與第九號交響曲的終了樂章也很適合，還有第十交響曲可供選擇……指揮家克勞迪奧‧阿巴多（Claudio Abbado，1933～2014）去年一月二十日過世，那天在中國曆法上是十二節氣的「大寒」，整個台灣籠罩在陰寒之中，黃昏我聽女兒提起他死訊，說是在網路上看到的，頓覺周圍空氣又冷了一些。

我搬來南港後，電視上可看Medici音樂頻道，常可看到阿巴多指揮樂團演出，他指揮的多是瑞士琉森節慶管弦樂團（Lucerne Festival Orchestra），曲目以馬勒的交響樂為多，當然也有跟他創辦的馬勒青年管弦樂團共同演出的，也有柏林愛樂的，但比例上少些。他2002年因胃癌辭掉柏林愛樂指揮之職，到瑞士靜養，受琉森的這個樂團之邀，擔任他們的音樂指導。這個樂團成立在1938年，是由指揮家托斯卡尼尼創辦的，原本是附屬於該地方的一個規模不大的音樂院，只有假期才演出，所以團名上有個「節日」的字樣，但阿巴多掛名指揮後成了轟動，各地慕名前來的音樂迷不計其數，再加上阿巴多認真又有號召，請了許多別人請不起或請不到的音樂家前來「助拳」，譬如從柏林愛樂各請來擔綱了二十多年的第一中提琴手Wolfram Christ及雙簧管能手Albrecht Mayer，又請來這幾年頻頻來台演出深獲好評的古德曼（Natalia Gutman，1942～）擔任樂團的第一大提琴手，團中其他樂手，幾乎也都是一時之選，再加上演出節目，都排得十分精彩，這個原本有點業餘性質的樂園，在阿巴多指揮棒下，脫胎換骨的變成了不比柏林愛樂差的樂團了。偏向理智的指揮家阿巴多好像從此就在琉森，直到過世，其間也偶爾指揮過其他樂團，但都是臨時的性質。我受限於所播的節目，看到他指揮的以馬勒的較多（他在琉森的演出不只馬勒），印象也較深。馬勒死於1911年，在二十世紀中期之前，他沒有太大的「定評」，有人認為他不太跟得上時代，馬勒創作的後期，正巧碰上維也納新樂派領導人荀白克（Arnold Schonberg，1874～1951）所倡「無調性」（atonality）音樂最昌盛的時代，荀白克無調性代表作〈空中花園之篇〉（Das Buch der Hangenden Garten）便作於1909年，那時馬勒尚在，馬勒的音樂跟他比較，顯得老調又過於浪漫，不夠「先進」，所以死後，沉寂了一段時期。但種子留了下來，一碰到適合的土壤，便也可以蔚然成林。馬勒死了將近半個世紀之後，他的交響曲一個一個的被推出來，在演出與唱片界造成風靡。在許多馬勒交響曲全集的唱片中，我認為伯恩斯坦與阿巴多的最好，像海汀克、殷巴爾、蕭提與鄧許泰特都有全集的錄音，他們的演出各有特色，錄音也算好，但在全集中總有一兩首不是很「完美」，整體上總覺得不如伯恩斯坦與阿巴多。伯恩斯坦是個熱情又浪漫的指揮家，他的唱片把馬勒的激情（包括愛與恐懼）都十足表現出來了，伯恩斯坦的版本可用淋漓盡致來形容。阿巴多跟他不同，阿巴多是一個比較偏向理智的指揮家，他極重視音樂的細節，對整體也掌握分明，他表面上隨和又親切，但他在音樂上要求的似乎更嚴整些，每次聽他指揮的馬勒，彷彿都有新發現。我原本聽的馬勒唱片是集合了他指揮柏林與維也納愛樂演出的那一套，就已經覺得非常好了，後來聽到他指揮琉森的，更覺得靈魂被清洗過似的，琉森的這套是他一生最後心力所瘁，我心裡想，就是讓馬勒聽了也會感動不已的。馬勒的作品常由自己指揮首演，但我想，當時的條件，恐怕無法錄到這麼優美又崇高的境界的。阿巴多紀念音樂會在我知道阿巴多死訊的當晚，便想到假如琉森要舉辦一個阿巴多紀念音樂會，該演奏哪些曲目？當時我想到的是馬勒的作品，因為他死前最重視的就算是馬勒了。要我選的話，第二號交響曲《復活》的最後一樂章該是首選，那一樂章是全曲的最高潮，又有宗教「復活」的意涵，是最適宜在那種場合演出的。這個樂章雖然頂適合，但中間有女高音與女中音的獨唱，還得加上一個大規模的合唱團，一次演完要半個小時以上，稍長了些，假如條件或人力不足，恐怕很難演出。我後來覺得第三號交響曲與第九號交響曲的終了樂章也很適合，兩個都是慢板，演奏要花二十多分鐘，長度要比《復活》更恰當些。但第九號的終曲太過悲傷低沉，最後五分鐘，幾乎要接近用「無聲」的方式進行，我從影帶「看」過阿巴多指揮琉森樂團的演出，到這樂章的後半部時，連演奏廳的燈光也調暗到僅見人影的地步，對這段樂曲很有說明的作用，但真要用還是有些困難，無聲的境界是要藉長段的有聲來「經營」的，如不演奏全曲，光選一部分就無法達到那種效果，這樣說來就不如選第三號交響曲的終曲了。第三交響曲的終曲是個慢板的樂章，標示上寫著「緩慢、平靜、充滿感情的」（Langsam. Ruhevoll. Empfunden），表面聽來很沉重，然而結尾兩組定音鼓大敲，銅管與弦樂齊奏，顯示生命的形式多變，不見得因死亡而終止了其他可能。再要選的話，還有第十交響曲可供選擇，第十號交響曲只有一個慢板樂章，馬勒寫了不久就病死了，所以也是個「未完成」，這唯一的樂章，結束在極幽微的情緒中，跟第九號有點相似，也是近乎無聲。當然也可選貝多芬的，阿巴多也只一次錄過他的全集，貝多芬的交響曲之中，最適合的是第三號《英雄》中標示著Adagio assai的那個樂章，這個樂章的主題便是為英雄送葬，常在喪禮上使用。這段音樂，在純聽音樂的時候覺得沉鬱頓挫，感發力特強，但在喪禮上聽，就有點落於俗套的感覺，因為用得太多了。我又想了一些曲子，都是當時有所感的亂想，一切當然更不由我作主的。時間過去，也都忘了。猜想竟與事實吻合過了一年之後，我在Youtube上竟然看到琉森為阿巴多舉行紀念音樂會的影片，這場音樂會在2014年4月6日舉行，現場演出了舒伯特的《未完成》與阿班．貝格（Alban Berg，1885～1935）的小提琴協奏曲，還有讓我驚喜的是最後演奏的「確實」是馬勒第三號交響曲的終曲。我不該「喜」的，在追思的過程中總是帶著憂傷成份，但想到自己完全毫無邊際的亂猜，竟然與事實暗合，還是有點得意。舒伯特的《未完成》是名曲，寫了兩個樂章並沒有寫下去，並不是作曲家死了，而是他把原稿鎖在抽屜忘了，等到他過世，才被人發現，所以稱它「未完成」，這首雖未完成，但很多人認為是舒伯特交響曲之中最好的作品，用在追思會上，充滿了明示與隱喻，是很好的選擇。這首曲子編制不大，曲式也比較簡單，琉森演出的時候採用「缺席指揮」的方式，也就是指揮的位置空著，令人想起該在上面的人。第二首是由一位出身拉脫維亞的年輕指揮家尼爾森斯（Andris Nelsons，1978～）指揮演出阿班．貝格小提琴協奏曲，擔任小提琴獨奏的是Isabelle Faust，在這段音樂進行之前，由一位德籍演員Bruno Ganz上台朗讀德國十八世紀詩人Friedrich Holderlin的一首長詩。說起阿班．貝格的小提琴協奏曲，卻也與馬勒扯上一些關係，這首曲子是阿班．貝格一生最後的作品，作於1935年，寫完不久他便死了。阿班．貝格，出身維也納富裕家庭，十九歲時遇到比他大九歲的荀白克，一見傾心，便與朋友魏本（Anton Webern，1883～1945）一起拜入師門，結為同志，三人後來聲譽日隆，逐漸成為維也納新樂派的核心人物。1935年他受一友人之託寫一首小提琴協奏曲，本來他還有些猶疑，但聽到馬勒遺孀再婚後所生的十八歲女兒Alma Manon Gropius逝世的消息，悲不自勝又靈感泉湧，便用了幾個月的時間，很快寫好這首副題是〈紀念一位天使〉的曲子，所以這首音樂，本身就有悼亡的含意，再加上貝格寫完這曲子幾個月後就過世，更讓這首樂曲，充滿哀思的情調。紀念會的最後一首曲子是馬勒的第三號Ｄ小調交響曲終曲樂章，第三號交響曲寫於1895～1896年，是馬勒創作力最高、意志力最強時候的作品。馬勒的交響曲，從表面上聽，不論形式與內容，好像都很接近，不像貝多芬，每期的風格都不同，然而仔細聽，每個時期的創作，也是有些區別的。（上）(中國時報)，
