美國軍事戰略研究機構蘭德公司最新一份報告指出，中國的短程導彈已增加到1400枚，可以多重打擊並癱瘓台灣的空軍基地；另中國已將50％的戰鬥機更新為第4代戰鬥機，與美軍差距縮小。到2017年，美國指揮官將無法在台灣地區找到能保證美軍7天不受中國襲擊的基地。報告中對比了中美兩國在10個方面的軍事實力，並得出結論，中國未來將具備更大的能力提高海上和空中作戰能力，並認為「未來5至15年，美國在亞洲的優勢不斷下降」、「美國需要重新思考與中國的戰爭」。
