全株可食一級棒台東農改場推廣木虌果，果實營養豐富，能打成果汁也能入菜。（黃力勉攝）

屬於原住民傳統作物的木虌果，其實全株可食，熟果假種皮的茄紅素含量，甚至超過蕃茄70倍，由於種植量少，市面上難得一見，市價每公斤超過百元，台東農改場經過採集栽培後，1日成果發表推廣種植，希望將木虌果發展成台東特色農產。台東農改場助理研究員薛銘童指出，木虌果屬葫蘆科苦瓜屬作物，果仁形狀像鱉因而得名，具大規模種植潛力作物，不過植株屬雌雄異株，開花後才能辨別雌雄，要增加產量，雌雄比約10比1即可。

副研究員吳菁菁表示，原住民主要以汆燙方式食用嫩葉，果實也能入菜，青果與排骨酥一起燉湯，熟果包圍果仁的假種皮，是營養最豐富部分，可煮粥、做成海鮮燉飯，打成果汁加上氣泡水，就是風味獨特木虌果氣泡飲，因果仁具有微毒性需取出不能食用。農改場長陳信言說，台東種植荖花荖葉多，部分廢耕荖葉園可直接轉作種植木虌果，環境很適合成長。(中國時報)，
