「東方之星」於5月28日從南京啟程,原計畫6月7日到達重慶,行程共計11天,白天停靠遊玩、晚上開船趕路。根據與「東方之星」同在南京出航的另一艘客輪上旅遊團隊說法,他們因天候不佳而選擇在湖北赤壁停靠,但「東方之星」為了趕在隔日抵達湖北荊州,仍繼續前進。據獲救船員表示,1日晚間9點28分遭遇龍捲風,船左舷受風,整個向右傾覆,客輪在半分鐘到1分鐘間就翻覆,當時乘客已準備休息,連發出求救訊號都來不及。長江航道及海事部門接獲通知後派出多艘船隻進行搜救,到昨晨船長及輪機長已獲救,但被警方控制調查中。底朝天 水下救援很吃力昨早約8點,東方之星就像一隻倒扣的大碗沉入江底,船底朝天。現場打撈一具遺體,據悉為旅行社導遊。有10多名蛙人進入切開的船艙內搜救,由於整個船體朝天,水下壓力過大,打開房門並不容易,蛙人正盡力打開每一個房間。雖然經過了一整天,但根據救援現場最新消息,目前船艙內仍有生存跡象,潛水員潛入水底敲擊船體,船內有應答反應。救援人員分析說,由於客輪翻覆太快,船內還有氣泡空間,還有一定存活可能。大陸總理李克強在得知船難訊息後,於昨晨趕赴現場指揮救災,他並於昨日深夜決定,今日將把船體稍為吊高,把露出水面的船艙進行切割,打出一條船內通道,再派潛水員利用通道下水救援。人民解放軍總參謀長助理馬宜明表示,夜間搜救分3部分進行,船內部分由海軍、海事、長航部門負責,準備逐艙搜尋,一個不漏;由船到岸部分,由廣州軍區和長航部門負責;陸上運送由武警和地方負責。切割船艙打通 逐艙搜救根據最新統計,船上405名旅客中,無台灣旅客,共來自大陸7個省市(上海97人、江蘇204人、浙江11人、天津43人、福建19人、安徽8人、山東23人),其中多數為老年旅遊團成員,年齡在50至80歲中間,年齡最小者為來自天津的3歲兒童。「東方之星」號並無超載情形,客輪也未達25年使用年限,而船上器材一切符合大陸法令規範,事故原因純粹出於超過12級龍捲風的力道太大、無法預測、防無可防。大陸內河航行客輪多把8級風視為安全臨界點。,
